Circumcision is Sexual Abuse

Strapping a human down to a board and cutting their genitals is abuse. I don’t care the age or sex of the person. It’s abuse.

There is no sensible reason for this procedure. I hear excuses all the time:

I want him to look like his dad.  If his dad lost his arm in the war, would you amputate your babies arm? A baby’s penis doesn’t look anything like his dad’s anyway!

I want him to look like everyone else.  90% of the world is uncircumcised. And half of American boys are uncircumcised. And trust me, you’ll struggle enough with him wanting to look like everyone else when he’s a teen. My boys are very proud to be intact. My beautiful 18 year old son has been known to give a high five to his friends proclaiming “Skins rule!”

It’s religious. Really? Do you keep a kosher kitchen? No. Do you use a bank that charges interest? Yes. Are you an Orthodox Jew? Maybe. If you’re Christian, Jesus’ death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice. If your Jewish, God did not mandate circumcision. In the original version of the Torah, the book of J, circumcision is not even mentioned. Fallible men devised circumcision as a way to curb masturbation. If your Pagan, shame on you for even considering circumcising your perfect child. Despite what Dr. Sears says, abuse in the name of God is the most disgusting abuse there is.

It’s cleaner.  No it’s not. I have 4 uncircumcised sons and done NOTHING. No cleaning, no retracting (NEVER RETRACT YOUR SONS FORESKIN!!!!) and I have never had an infection or problem. Have you ever changed a baby girls dirty diaper? Whoa! Cleaning the poop out of all those folds! Would it be cleaner if we removed them? Probably. But it’s disgusting and wrong.

Babies don’t feel pain. Of course they do. In fact some studies suggest they feel it more acutely than adults.

It’s healthier. For decades, the American Academy of Pediatrics proclaimed there was NO MEDICAL BENEFIT to circumcision. But recently, there has been some chatter about circumcised men in Sub Sahara Africa having lower rates of HIV. But your son is not a sexually promiscuous man in Africa is he? And hey, I am sure the AAP is scrambling for anything positive to say about circumcision. In 1999 American doctors made well over $21 million performing circumcisions. Many of them paid for by Medicaid. And since those numbers have been declining, it’s hurting the industry!

Here is a scene from the incredible movie Birth As We Know It. If you still haven’t made up your mind that circumcision is abuse, watching one may help. If you already hate circumcision, you may not want to watch.

Please, please, please do not circumcise your sons. Stop this tradition of sexual abuse. Be an example.
Your son is perfect, just the way he is.

  1. I did not have my son cicumcised when he was a baby, as I believed this was the best course. My son had infections on and off for years with two major infections leaving him urinating two different directions. He had to have major reconstructive surgery under general anesthesia when he was 9 and he remembers the experience! If I had to do it again I would have had him circumcised when he was a baby, he would not have a memory of this horrific experience. He is 23 aqnd has said his sons will be done when they are born.

  2. A small percentage of boys will get infections in their penis', regardless of whether they are circumcised or not. That must have been very difficult for you! One of my daughters struggled with UTIs. However, I still feel that it is wrong to routinely circumcise everyone to prevent infection in a few. Also, don't forget that circumcision frequently has complications, sometimes horrific ones. 100 babies DIE each year from circumcision.

  3. melanie! you forgot THEY'LL GET CANCERRRRR!!! oh wait, but we have to leave out the part where those studies were done on men, in their 70's at the time, the majority of whom had increased risk factors – smoking, multiple sexual partners, std's, etc. but whatev. makes for a better story without that part.

  4. I was born and raised Hassidic Jewish and needless to say I was circumcised. Today I consider myself a humanistic, atheistic Jew and wouldn't even consider circumcising my son. I agree with everything you wrote.
